POLICE are appealing for information from the public to help their investigation into a town centre fire which is being treated as arson.

Three fire engines were called out to tackle the fire in the ground floor of former council offices in Chesterway, Northwich.

The fire crews were called just after 7pm on Sunday following a report of a fire from a member of the public.

Firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used a water jet to tackle the blaze in the concrete-cladded building.

The crews were at the scene until 9.40pm, and after checking the building to make sure there was no further area of heat they handed the incident over to the police.

The section of Chesterway towards London Road was closed while the blaze was being dealt with.

Cheshire Police said the fire was being treated as arson, and Chesterway was closed for a short period to enable fire officers to deal with the incident.

Cheshire Police tweeted on Sunday night: “Currently dealing with a fire at old council buildings Chesterway in #Northwich. Minor road closures may cause delays.

“Chesterway in #Northwich now closed towards London Road. Fire brigade still on scene and fire believed to be out. Update to follow.”

Anyone with any information about the fire is asked to call Cheshire Police on 101, quoting incident 831 of September 27, 2015. Alternatively information can be reported anonymously to Crimestoppers on 0800 5555 111.

The fire was attended by two fire engines from Northwich and one from Winsford.
