A TEAM of cyclists from Davenham are planning a 100-mile race track relay to raise money for a dad-of-two whose plight has touched their hearts.

The 12-strong Davenham Dawdlers are taking part in the Planet X Circuit Days 100 mile Challenge at Oulton Park on Sunday.

The team includes Paul Winder, John Baxter, Andrew Poole, Simon Freedman, Andy Clare, Paul Potts, Steven Walsh, Nigel Seal, Andrew Barnett, John Millington, Owen Oakes and Brendan Conlon.

The men, who range in age and cycling ability, all drink at The Oddfellows Arms, which is where they heard about Keith Harte, whose sister-in-law Louise Maidment works at the pub.

Keith, himself a keen cyclist, was diagnosed with spinal cancer in 2014 and had his first operation to alleviate the pain in November last year.

Since then there have been three more operations, with the last one in August leaving him without any mobility in his legs.

This operation took place on the same day that his second child was born.

The team have set up a fundraising page, which has already attracted more than £1,600 in sponsorship.

Paul Winder, from the Davenham Dawdlers, said: "I've done a few fundraisers in my time and the response to this has surprised me.

"I think it's because it's something people can relate to."

The cyclists hope to raise £2,500, which will help Keith and his family with the costs of adapting his home.

The fundraising page will remain open until October 15.
