AN OLYMPIAN will officially open Northwich's £13.7 million leisure and culture facility on Saturday.

The opening ceremony for Northwich Memorial Court, which welcomed the public through its doors in May, will be performed by Olympic swimmer Sharron Davies among a weekend of activities.

A plaque will be unveiled by Sharron and Cheshire West and Chester Council chairman Bob Rudd, at 3pm, followed by a session for autographs and photographs with the silver medallist.

Before the ceremony Sharron, also a TV presenter, will host a question and answer session with members of Northwich Centurions Swimming Club and officially launch their gala.

Cllr Rudd said: "We want as many people as possible to come along and help us celebrate this special occasion, and join in the exciting free activities on offer.

"There will also be an opportunity for local residents to meet Sharron for autographs and photos - this really is an occasion not to be missed."

Free activities on offer throughout the weekend include wet 'n' wild pool sessions, fitness classes, demonstrations by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service, a performance from the Air Cadet band, competitions, workshops and children's activities.

Memorial Court is operated by Brio Leisure and was built by Wates Construction in partnership with Cheshire West and Chester Council.

It features a 25-metre six-lane swimming pool with flume, learner pool, 80-station gym, spa/jacuzzi, 500-person multi-purpose theatre and dance studio.

It also boasts a community hall, a kitchen and two bars, while outdoors there is a pedestrian plaza and a memorial garden featuring the relocated memorial stones from the memorial hall, which formerly occupied the site.
