ROADWORKS will start this week in preparation for a roundabout reconstruction in January.

Advanced utility works will last until the end of the year in readiness for the multi-million pound project to redevelop and increase the size of the five-road roundabout at the junction of Chesterway, Leicester Street, New Warrington Road and Station Road.

The work will centre on Station Road and will take place mainly in the footpath but there will be some lane closures in Chesterway while BT diverts equipment.

The roundabout scheme itself, which is financed with £3.4 million Government 'pinch point' funding, will start in January.

Cllr Brian Clarke, Cheshire West and Chester Council's cabinet member for economic development and infrastructure, said: "There could well be some disruption while the BT work takes place however this preparatory work will make sure that the major improvement scheme can get underway in January.

"The roundabout works from early next year will increase the capacity of the roundabout to ensure the road infrastructure can support the widespread regeneration of Northwich.

"The extra traffic will be generated by new retail and leisure developments such as Barons Quay, Memorial Court and the Lion Salt Works. "Once complete, the whole scheme aims to improve safety for drivers and cyclists, and significantly improve traffic flow."

Plans for the roundabout were first announced in 2013 but these were axed in December last year while an alternative idea put forward by objectors was considered.

Cheshire West and Chester Council said this alternative layout would not be viable due to cost and technical issues but it amended its original plans and pledged to work with neighbouring traders to reduce the impact of the scheme.
