A BARREL load of real ale enthusiasts made the most of the return of Northwich Beer Festival at the weekend.

More than 1,000 people packed into Northwich Memorial Court for the 22nd annual event, held in three sessions on Friday and Saturday.

Organised by the Rotary Club of Northwich and the Rotary Club of Northwich Vale Royal, the event boasted more than 70 beers, ciders and perries, with porter, mild, IPA, stout, bitters, wheat beer and fruit beer on the list.

Perennial beer festival favourite Wobbly Bob won in the popularity stakes yet again, with the first barrel emptied by 9pm on the Friday night.

Titanic's Plum Porter came a close second while Pink Lady proved particularly popular in the cider selection.

This was the first beer festival at the new venue of Memorial Court, which replaces the event's former home of Northwich Memorial Hall.

Steve Wheat, beer festival chairman, said: "Our 22nd festival was a great success but we're already planning next year's event.

"It was brilliant to be back in the centre of Northwich at the fantastic Memorial Court.

"We'd like to thank our sponsors, our volunteers, the charities who entered into the spirit of the event, and most of all our customers.

"See you next year!"

Festival-goers also enjoyed live music from Bill Brooks Blues Band on Friday and Traces of Nutz on Saturday, while those wanting a quiet drink could enjoy a seated session without music on Saturday lunchtime.

The festival was in aid of The Carers Centre, Alzheimers UK, Samaritans and Speakability.
