TONY Smith is confident a number of Super League clubs can come to an agreement on developing a reserve division next season.

Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby has been vocal in his support for a reserve league, which has seen some opposition from sides that believe it would be too expensive.

But Smith believes a stage between under 19s and first grade rugby league would be beneficial to young players, with dual registration not always proving beneficial to either club.

“We’re still working that through, there is a lot of interest in it from us and a number of other clubs,” said Smith.

“We see the necessity in it and how it can help the development of players. I think that’s huge. It’s had a big bearing on a lot of teams this year in developing the young players.

“So we’re still involved in it and there’ll be something to come out of that.”

He used Declan Patton as an example. The 20-year-old half back has featured in nine first team games this season, but has not played since June.

“Dec hasn’t played since June 14, so it’s dreadful development of a young player and that need to be rectified,” added Smith.

“Confident is the right term, I think there is enough interest from us and a number of other clubs to make it happen.

“So it’s pretty much we’re working it through. It’ll take a little bit of time, but we’re pretty sure it’ll happen.”
