FAMILY history detective Vivien Roworth has thanked Wincham and Northwich residents for their help in providing information for a book she is writing.

Vivien, who lives on The Isle of Man, is researching and writing a book about her husband’s fifth great grandfather, Sergeant Major William Roworth, who, she believes, came from Dunham.

“His link with Dunham is the Roworth family, who lived and were born there in the 1760s and 1770s,” said Vivien.

“His link with Wincham is through his parents, as his last letter home before he died was to them at the address – Mr and Mrs Roworth, at the Hon Booth Grey’s, Wincham, Northwich.

“The Hon Booth Grey was the second son of the fourth Earl of Stamford, who lived at Dunham Massey.

“It is possible, therefore, that the Roworths senior (William and Elizabeth), worked in some capacity for Hon Booth Grey.

“The information which has been sent in, following the recent request for help concerning the Honourable Booth Grey, and also the Roworth family of Dunham, has been most gratifying and helpful.

“The answer to whether Honourable Booth Grey ever lived at Wincham Hall is a resounding yes, and further information has been forthcoming concerning one of the Roworth family children.

“The paper trail for both of these is specific and valid.

“I would like to offer my grateful thanks to all the good folks of Wincham and Northwich for all their help, and particularly to Annie Makepeace, Joe Robinson, Michael Watts and Lyn McCulloch for sharing their time, knowledge and expertise, as well as the Northwich Guardian for publicising my appeal for information. Many thanks.”

Anyone who has information which could help Vivien in her research for the book is asked to contact Wincham Parish Council clerk Naomi Morris by emailing her at winchampc@talktalk.net
