MORE angry motorists are challenging parking tickets handed out at Memorial Court in Northwich.

Kath Lewis and Mark Wilson contacted the Guardian recently after being fined for parking respectively near the coach bays and in an end slot in the central part of the car park.

Kath said the space she parked in had a white line on either side, and Mark said it was not clear where you could and could not park because there were no hatch markings.

Two further drivers have now come forward after receiving tickets for parking in similar circumstances.

Clare Schafer from Weaverham received a £70 fine for parking in the same space near the bus bays as Kath Lewis, and Grahame Sutton from Hartford was fined £25 for parking in an irregular-shaped area at the end of a line of bays.

Clare parked within white lines which have now been removed, and the area where Grahame parked now has hatch markings.

Grahame and Clare are challenging the issuing of the tickets, Grahame on the basis that no offence had been committed.

His ticket stated he had parked incorrectly, but he said there was nothing on the parking sign to define what constituted correct parking.

“If there is no hatching it is a space, and I parked neatly,” he said, claiming the sign was deliberately vague about what constituted correct parking because it made it difficult for motorists to challenge a ticket.

“I was angry about the ticket, and would be prepared to go to court over this because we have to stand up to these kind of things,” he said, describing the issuing of the ticket as “draconian”.

Clare Schafer received a ticket for parking in an area not designated for that class of vehicle, the same reason on the ticket received by Kath Lewis.

Clare said she parked within what she believed was a space because there were lines either side of her car, and there was nothing to state cars could not park there.

Cheshire West and Chester Council said it could not comment on the cases because they were ‘live’.
