WARRINGTON Wolves’ search for a new half back continues despite an offer for Parramatta Eels’ Chris Sandow.

The Wire this week announced former England internationals Chris Bridge and Richie Myler will both leave the club at the end of the season, for Widnes Vikings and Catalans Dragons respectively.

NRL half back Sandow is among the players Wolves are looking to call on to fill the void.

“Yes and a number of others,” said Smith when asked if the club had held talks with the 26-year-old, who started out with South Sydney Rabbitohs.

“We’ve been enquiring in all sorts of areas, we’re in there negotiating and working with a number of different people and agents around the world.”

The club’s head of coaching and rugby says Wolves are pursuing a scrum half of a different ilk to out-going 25-year-old Myler, who he believes has missed the presence of Lee Briers.

“It’s probably a good change for Rich,” added Smith.

“He’s had a good five years here and we’ve had a good partnership with him.

“The team has changed around him and I think he’s ready for a different challenge and we’re ready for a different style of half back than probably what Rich’s natural capabilities give him at this stage.

“He may well develop some of those attributes by going somewhere else as well. That often happens.

“Rich complemented Lee Briers enormously and Lee gave the team a lot of direction. Rich supported that well.

“Both in terms of getting the team around, but also in terms of support play and to allow somebody like Lee to direct things.

“Rich probably hasn’t had those same sorts of qualities as Lee, so he’s needed someone a bit more like Lee around him. It probably has had an effect on Rich for the last couple of years as well.”

Myler’s contract is up at the end of the season, while centre Bridge had another year to run on his deal.

“Bridgey’s last few years have probably been a bit frustrating for him with injuries,” explained Smith.

“It’s been hard for him to get consistent performances in the past few years. But he went through some really good periods as well, and so did the team at that sort of time.”

Smith says Wolves have the option to extend the contracts of Roy Asotasi, Kevin Penny and Joe Philbin at the end of the season, while Gary Wheeler’s contract is also due to expire.

“There are certainly options on all of those boys,” he said. “It depends on whether we take those up or not.

“We’ll make decisions on those boys when the time is right.”
