IT has been more than 27 years since Leigh last beat Warrington in a competitive clash.

That was a 28-5 Stones Bitter Championship victory at Hilton Park on 4 April, 1988.

Warrington are undefeated in 11 meetings with Leigh since, having won 10 and drawn one.

Warrington prop Chris Hill played in the last Challenge Cup meeting between the sides - as a Leigh substitute in his previous club's 28-16 home defeat to the Wolves.

Warrington have a trio of players still at the club from that 2008 clash. Kevin Penny (now in his second spell), Ben Westwood and Ben Harrison.

Penny scored a 58th minute try in the game. Warrington have not lost a home Challenge Cup fixture with Leigh since 1921.

Wolves progressed in 2001 with a 20-10 home victory in front of 8,844 inspired by two Lee Briers tries.

However the sides are equal in Challenge Cup head-to-heads on four wins apiece.

The first time the sides met in the competition they shared a 10-10 draw in 1921 at Leigh in front of 21,000 fans.

But it was the visitors who won the return at Wilderspool as 19,400 turned out four days later to see Leigh enjoy an 8-3.

Warrington then enjoyed three successive Challenge Cup wins over Saturday’s opponents between 1930 and 1948, the latter drawing in a crowd of 27,514 as the hosts won 8-3 in the last 16.

Victories for Leigh followed in 1959, 1968 and 1982, but Wolves will be hoping to draw level on wins as the higher-ranked side at The Halliwell Jones Stadium this weekend.

Centurions, however, sit top of the Championship table and have only lost once this season, while they are the only club outside of Super League to remain in this year’s cup competition.

Winger Liam Kay is their top try scorer this season, crossing 26 times in 20 games, followed by Ryan Brierley with 21 scores in 19 appearances.

However Martyn Ridyard is their top points scorer, needing one more goal to make a century for the season while he also had four tries and a drop goal to his name.

Leigh will be missing forward Jamie Acton through suspension, while former Warrington hooker Micky Higham cannot play due to an agreement in his transfer deal.
