FOR half an hour at least, Warrington looked like kick-starting their Super League campaign in Hull.

Having taken the lead thanks to a barnstorming Chris Hill run and score, the visitors appeared capable of soaking up all Hull KR had to throw at them.

But once their line was finally breached it sparked a flurry of scores for the hosts.

That fight from the first half hour evaporated and Wolves’ second-half performance was arguably their worst 40 minutes of the season so far.

Fans have become accustomed to an inconsistent Wolves side this campaign, but one that has at least been within touching distance of their opponents in previous defeats.

Warrington's win against Rovers' city rivals Hull FC had been characterised by a certain defensive grit.

But Chris Chester’s side found it all too easy to cut through the visitors in the Friday night rain a couple of miles across town.

The position for Hill’s opener was set after Daryl Clark charged down a kick, with the hooker then combining with Ashton Sims to send Wolves’ vice skipper over.

Tony Smith’s side could not build on their lead, faltering in front of a pocket of travelling primrose and blue support, and it took nearly 50 minutes to put another successful attacking move together.

That resulted in Gene Ormsby sliding over in the corner.

The winger was starved of the ball for the most part, but slick handling along the line ended with Stefan Ratchford teeing up Ormsby for his 10th try of the season.

Smith was forced into trying another new combination at half back, with youngster Declan Patton recalled and Chris Bridge moved alongside him from the centres.

Gareth O’Brien’s concussion and Richie Myler’s withdrawal due to the birth of his son brought the changes about, but Hull KR were dealing with losses of their own.

They were without influential captain Terry Campese, although Albert Kelly’s kicking game in his absence caused Wolves problems.

Liam Salter benefited from a crossfield kick after the break, before former Warrington man Tyrone McCarthy latched on to a clever Kelly grubber.

Further tries from Ken Sio, Kieran Dixon, Josh Mantellato and Kris Welham compounded the damage.
