MEMORIES of Northwich are being collected by a group which aims to preserve the town's heritage.

Northwich and District Heritage Society hopes to produce a book of life in Northwich since the Second World War and is appealing for help from Guardian readers.

Tony Bostock, chairman, said: "When the society was set up back in the 1980s there were then people around who would have had a memory of the First World War and of the town in the 1920s, but sadly and naturally the vast majority are no longer with us.

"However, our current older population will remember the Second World War and of growing up in the area in the '40s and '50s.

"Although in the recent past this is still a part of our heritage and such memories ought to be preserved for future generations.

"It has come to the society's attention that many older residents hold old photographs and other things – leaflets, theatre and sports programmes, etc – which are hidden away in cupboards, drawers or even up in the loft.

"These would prove of great value to the present generation of townspeople in understanding the past.

"What we seek is whatever people can remember of the wartime, their schooldays, early working years, recreation, sport, etc.

"Contributors need not write down their memories – just let us know you have something to offer and we'll visit and record what you have to say.

The society is also asking to borrow photographs and other items to copy and include on an online image bank at northwich-heritage.org.uk.
