A KNITTED Northwich was the centrepiece of a day organised to celebrate shopping local.

St Helen's Church, the Penny Black and Quayside pubs, Northwich Library, Bruschetta Cafe, Nail Perfection, Webbs Butchers, the River Weaver and even Town Bridge have been immortalised in woollen stitches by supporters of a town centre shop.

The masterpiece was crafted by the two knitting clubs set up by Crafty Stitches, in Witton Street, which also appeared in the cleverly stitched street scene.

Louise Hough, from the shop, said: "There's been about 15 of us involved and it's taken months to do.

"Last year I did a knitted hanging basket and thought 'I've got to do something bigger and better this year.

"I searched online and found BrisWOOL, in Bristol, and thought 'how can we do that?'

"I frightened everyone when I told them and it was a case of where do you start knitting a building?"

Louise's mum Joan, from the shop, started off by knitting Crafty Stitches and then the group picked neighbouring businesses and town landmarks.

They decided on a scale, worked from photographs and fitted their knitted sleeves on to boxes and frames.

The clubs also knitted a flock of sheep to populate the street.

Yarn Shop Day saw the return of the knitted hanging basket to Witton Street for the day, as well as knitted bunting, homemade cakes and cosy marquees full of spinners and knitters.
