WHEN homeless hound Daisy was dreaming of her forever home, she might not have imagined that it would be on a narrowboat in Northwich.

But thanks to her ‘first mate’ Brian Hughes, who fell in love with the seven-year-old Beagle when he first met her on Valentine’s Day this year, she is now thoroughly enjoying her laid-back life on the waterways.

Brian, who has lived on his narrowboat in Northwich since 2013, said: “She has taken to her new life really well. I think she was destined for it. She loves walking along the towpaths and now meets up regularly with lots of four-legged friends.

“When she hears the engine start up she just heads for the sofa to relax whilst I do the work, then jumps up and is ready and waiting to get off when we stop. She seems to love the fact that she gets to visit lots of new places and it certainly keeps life interesting for both of us.”

Brian adopted Daisy from Dogs Trust Manchester and despite the trust re-homing more than 650 pooches since it opened in October, Daisy was the first to find her new home on water.

Dawn Bishop, Manager at the Rehoming Centre, said: “When we do home checks we are usually advising people about, for example, making sure their garden is secure and fences are high enough. The advice we needed to give Brian was a little different and included buying Daisy a life jacket and making sure she was always secure if she’s on deck.

“Daisy is a delightful, mild mannered dog so a lovely, sedate life travelling along the canals of Cheshire and beyond is perfect for her.”
