A MARATHON winner from Northwich was moved to tears as she ran the London Marathon competitively for the final time.

Paula Radcliffe, the Northwich-born distance runner, completed the 26.2-mile course in two hours 36 minutes 55 seconds on Sunday.

She won the marathon in 2002, 2003 and 2005, and her 2003 winning time of two hours, 15 minutes and 25 seconds is still the world record.

After the event she said she had worn sunglasses to hide her emotions during the race.

Graham Evans, Conservative Parliamentary candidate for Weaver Vale, ran his fourth London Marathon on Sunday.

He was running for St Luke’s Hospice, based in Winsford, Halton Haven Hospice and ABF, the Soldiers' Charity (formerly the Army Benevolent Fund).

Graham said: “I am so delighted to have been able to complete the marathon and raise money for these fabulous local charities.

"In the midst of a general election campaign some said I was mad to run the marathon this year, but I’m not one to let politics get in the way of raising much needed funds for charities which are so close to my heart.”
