BRIDGWATER bellringers are making some noise – to attract new members.

St Mary’s Church in the town centre is holding a week long open event to help boost its numbers.

The bellringers are busy at regular services as well as weddings, funerals and competitions.

But Richard Lee, education officer at St Mary’s, says the current membership is already stretched.

“We have eight bells and ten members so things can get difficult if someone is off ill or on holiday,” he explained.

“Bellringing attracts people of all ages. We have one teenager and retired people in their seventies but we need to boost our regular numbers.”

St Mary’s will be open from 10am-2pm all this week for anyone interested in learning more about this ancient skill.

“People can just drop in for a chat,” explained Richard.

“I run classes for new people which in total last around 15 hours so it can be done in one week or spread over a longer period.

“The programme involves sports psychology and physiotherapy which surprises some people but health and safety is very important.

“One of our bells weighs over a tonne so they need to be operated properly and safely. We help to celebrate many local and national events such as St George’s Day and enjoy social activities outside of ringing.”
