BUSINESSWOMAN Amanda Rose is looking forward to helping to raise standards of English and maths in Northwich.

Amanda has helped convert a former ICI canteen into a Kumon study centre, bringing in new desks and chairs for pupils and all the equipment that goes into running a study centre.

Kumon is a supplementary education provider in maths and English for all ages and abilities, and Amanda recently became the instructor at the Kumon Northwich Study Centre at Unit 1, Winnington Hall, off Winnington Street.

“I have a range of education qualifica¬tions including an MA in education, but Kumon instructors do not teach in the traditional sense, we give instruction - it’s about empowering the child,” she said.

Amanda found the perfect spot for her study centre in the grounds of Winnington Hall, and with the help of a supportive landlord, her husband Andrew and friends and family, the centre is now open for business.

“I have decided I will spend the rest of my working life doing my utmost for children,” said Amanda, 51.

“My heart has been in Northwich from the moment I moved to this area in 2006 in my then capacity as Extended Services Co-ordinator for Vale Royal and from 2009 as strategic lead for Northwich Education Partnership.

“I’m passionate about children and the importance of self-belief, resilience and learning for life.

“Kumon encompasses all these elements, and I look forward to contributing to the skills for life agenda in Northwich, equipping children with the knowledge and ability to learn for themselves.”

After leaving school Amanda trained as a nursery nurse and went on to teach in further education.

Her most recent role was as integrated services lead for North¬wich Education Improvement Partnership, providing access to services such as childcare, parental support and health and wellbeing groups for the schools in Northwich and surrounding towns.

Her husband is Director of Buying for the National Union of Students Services Ltd, and will become one of three class assistants at the centre when he retires later this year.
