A TOP East Lancashire traffic cop is taking a motorcycle safety campaign on the road.

In September 2013 Insp Dave Mangan, who oversees road policing in the county’s East Division, lost his father in a motorbike crash. In tribute to his 72-year-old dad, he created a short a film to raise awareness of the dangers of riding while tired.

Throughout spring and summer Mike’s Last Ride will be taken around bike meets in Lancashire as part of BikeSafe.

Bikers who take part in the workshops will also be given a detailed briefing on hazard awareness and how to make their motorcycling safer, followed up by an on-road assessed ride.

This year the road safety project has secured further funding from the Lancashire Partnership for Road Safety to purchase a Ford Kuga, fitted out with a computer and large screen to travel to bikers meets across the country to show the film and other safety videos.

The workshops will take place at Accrington Fire Station on May 17 and August 16.

Insp Mangan said: “I created this short film to raise awareness in the biking community regarding the dangers of riding when you are tired and the risks bikers face when they make decisions at the end of the day.

“My dad dedicated his retirement to motorcycle safety and I would like to think he would be pleased something positive has come out of such a negative.”

Insp Mangan will be competing in Ironman UK in July and raising money for the air ambulance.
