WARRINGTON Wolves enjoyed a pack boost this week with the return of Anthony England and Ben Harrison to full fitness.

Tony Smith’s side visit Widnes Vikings tonight, Thursday, kick off 8pm, before hosting Castleford Tigers on Easter Monday, 2.45pm.

Harrison, who has featured in the 19 but has not been deemed fit enough for a match-day spot the past two weeks, and England, returning from an elbow injury, both make Smith’s 19-man squad, while Richie Myler could return on Monday following a groin operation.

“They’re all looking available over the weekend,” said Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby.

“It gives us more competition for places and they bring some experience.

“Anthony’s been a bit stop-start in terms of his season. He had a tremendous off-season and pre-season and has only had a chance to show glimpses of what he’s capable of.

“With a run of games now and a run of form he’ll show what he’s capable of. He’s in great physical condition at the moment, so hopefully he’ll be right to go.

“Ben Harrison has improved a lot. He’s had a rib cartilage problem and we could have played him with painkillers, but that wouldn’t have been in his best interest.

“Hopefully Ben can get back some of his form that saw him gain England selection only a couple of years ago.

“Myler can bring some direction to our play, some kicking game and support play. We’ve probably been lacking in a little bit of all of that.”

Wolves head into tonight’s ‘derby’ as Super League’s second-lowest points scorers and have not won both their Easter weekend fixtures since 2010 when they beat Salford and Hull FC.

They are also on the back of successive losses, but Smith sees these two games in five days as a chance to build some form.

“We need to ask a few more questions of our opponents and I expect us to do that this week,” he added.

“It’s a good period for us to get on top of some things we need to do better – our kicking game and a bit more oomph about our attack.

“We’re seeing this Easter period as a chance to find some form, be a bit consistent and practice some of what we’d like to be playing like.

“We’re approaching it in a different manner rather than complaining or worrying about it.”

Myler’s return may see him paired with Gareth O’Brien in the halves, a combination that started the season, with Chris Bridge and injured Gary Wheeler having deputised there since.

“It’s all about coping with it, we’ll continue to cope with it and come up with the best combinations we can,” explained Smith.

“Anybody who’s gone through the season with the same pair so far has done well, most teams have had to change it so far in their halves or combinations of major players.”

One side who have had to shuffle their half-back pairing is Widnes, but head coach Denis Betts welcomes captain Kevin Brown back into his squad this week.

“(Rhys) Hanbury is a class player, a super player, the same for Kev Brown,” said Smith.

“They’ve got some talented outside backs, they kick really well for each other.”
