THOUSANDS of people will flock to a Glasgow park this weekend for hours of family fun.

Around 2000 went to the Linn Park Community Fun Day last year and organisers say this year's has even more on offer.

The event, which has been organised by Glasgow City Council and The Friends of Linn Park, is on Sunday from noon-4pm.

Activities include cart rides, the Drakes of Hazard duck and dog display show, Highland dancers, children's games, a dog show and a bouncy castle.

Councillor Ruth Simpson, the council's executive member for land and environmental services, said: "Friends groups are playing an increasingly important part in helping improve our city's parks.

"They have a vital role, working with the community and the council to develop a diverse range of activities to attract people into local parks.."

The voluntary group, which has 76 members, was set up in November 2006 to work with the council to help preserve, restore and improve the park and help promote environmental awareness within the community.

Treasurer Stevie Burns said: "Our second community fun day has been made possible thanks to outstanding contributions and fundraising activities by the residents and businesses in the area. They managed to raise an impressive £1000."

FOLP won a National Lottery grant of £7000 to erect notice boards at the four entrances to the park. A grant from the council's South East Area Committee will be used to mark out a nature trail.

This weekend also sees the start of the week-long Largs Viking Festival.

The 28th annual event sees the Ayrshire town commemorate the 1263 Battle of Largs - the last Viking invasion in the UK.

Events include parades along the promenade, a Viking village and a fireworks display on September 6.

Music fans are also spoilt for choice this weekend with Retrofest at Strathclyde Country Park, Hydro Connect at Inveraray Castle, and the Millport Country and Western Festival all likely to draw big crowds.
