DEREK McINNES has signed a one-year contract extension at McDiarmid Park.

Now the St Johnstone manager hopes to celebrate by causing a shock tomorrow against Rangers, when the former Ibrox star goes head-to-head with his former team.

McInnes and his assistant, Tony Docherty, have been linked with a move elsewhere, but having agreed a deal until 2011 in Perth, he has no regrets about staying put.

"Tony and I always made it clear we wanted to give the SPL a go with Saints," he said.

"Chairman Geoff Brown gave me the job when I was far from the favourite for it. He must have seen something in me he likes.

"That was important and we are striving to take the football club forward.

"This season, that means retaining our status in the SPL."

Elsewhere, Saints captain Kevin Rutkiewicz claims there is plenty of optimism in the home dressing room ahead of the game.

"Although we have been in the First Division, we have got to the latter stages of the cups where you do get a wee taste of it," he said.

"Last year we got Rangers here in the cup and they beat us 2-0.

"However, in the first half we could have been ahead before they got their goal.

"We believe we can have a go against anybody, especially at home, so I think we will try to win the game, but we will see how it pans out.

"We know our place. Old Firm games are the glamour, this is the attraction of trying to get out of the First Division and into the Premier League for the fans, the players and the club.

"We will enjoy it and will go into it believing that, on our day, we are capable of taking something though we know it will be hard."
