CILLIAN SHERIDAN has gained a very special fan since becoming a regular starter in Celtic's attack in the past month.

Republic of Ireland boss Giovanni Trapattoni has been following very closely the progress of the 19-year-old beanpole striker.

And he has been sufficiently impressed to reveal that the rookie - who was still playing on public parks just over two years ago - is in line to be fast-tracked to the Republic's full squad.

Hamilton Accies' 18-year-old sensation James McCarthy - who lined up against Sheridan at New Douglas Park last weekend - is also tipped to get a call up from the Republic's Under-21 side before too long.

As he prepares his side to face Poland in a friendly in Dublin tonight, the famous Italian coach said: "Sheridan and McCarthy will be international players of the future."

Sheridan is hoping the return to fitness of Georgios Samaras will not mean he drops out of the Celtic side for Saturday's lunchtime kick-off against St Mirren at Love Street.

This is the game which has been earmarked for the return of Artur Boruc following his minor knee surgery.

He is due to report back to Lennoxtown today after being allowed home to Poland during his rehab.

But boss Gordon Strachan will want an explanation from the keeper why he has been pictured in Polish newspapers apparently drinking beer and smoking a cigar during his time back in his homeland.
