COCKNEY character actor Victor Maddern has died at the age of 65. He
had recently suffered a brain tumour.
He appeared in about 200 films, including I'm All Right Jack,
Private's Progress, and Cockleshell Heroes.
His distinctive craggy face was also seen in many television
programmes, notably in the Dick Emery Show.
Born in Seven Kings, Essex, he left home at 14 and went to sea for
three years. On his return he was awarded a scholarship at the Royal
Academy of Dramatic Art.
