Agent Jorge Mendes is ready to fly to Glasgow this week to finalise the midfielder’s move back to his homeland.

If the deal goes through, it will mean the debt-ridden Scottish champions will get the £20,00-a-week player off their wage bill.

However, manager Walter Smith, who has DaMarcus Beasley, Steven Davis, Maurice Edu, Steven Naismith and Kevin Thomson to choose from, will not be able to strengthen his squad.

Jorger Mendes confirmed: “We are travelling to Glasgow to finalise the deal with the club and player within the next few days.”

Meanwhile, Rangers have beaten off stiff competition from SPL rivals Hearts to secure the services of Alloa wonderkid Callum Wylie.

The 15-year-old striker will move to the Ibrox club when he finishes school.

Finally, Madjid Bougherra’s Algeria have been accused of breaking a fair play policy at the Africa Cup of Nations after a 0-0 draw with Angola was enough for both countries to qualify for the quarter-finals.
