Book offers glimpse behind the scenes

A UNIQUE glimpse behind the curtains of a middle class family in Edwardian and Georgian Whitegate is set to be published.

Irene Remembers is the autobiography of the writer, poet, broadcaster and teacher Irene Boyd who was completely paralysed from the age of 10.

Publishers Cockasnook Books said: "This is a unique glimpse behind the lace curtains of an upright, middle class family in Edwardian and Georgian England and records the intimacies and cruelties, joys and tragedies played out behind the respectable façade."

The book is released to mark 100 years since Irene's birth and 30 years after her death in 1977.

The book, which has previously been withheld from publication to protect the living will be launched on April 9 at Whitegate Village Hall adjacent to her childhood home The Beeches.

The launch will be followed by celebrations at Vale Royal Abbey which was the subject of Irene's famous haunting poem The King's Vale Royal.
