CABERFEIDH, and in particular the name of Kenneth McMaster, will be to

the fore on Saturday when the Strathpeffer side contest the final of

shinty's first national under-14 competition against Oban Celtic at

Spean Bridge.

At stake is the Kenneth McMaster Trophy, presented by his son David,

''in recognition of his dedication to the future of Camanachd.''

The 88-year-old former president of the Camanachd Association, who

still coaches the village's team at Fodderty primary school, was captain

of Caberfeidh when they won the junior Sutherland Cup in 1926 and

captain again in 1934 when they were winners of the Camanachd Cup.

The last time Caberfeidh were in a national final, in fact, was in

1939 when they again won the Camanachd Cup and it goes without saying

the the octogenarian is delighted that the 53-year gap has ended in this

way.

Ken Thomson, president of the Camanachd Association, said: ''I cannot

think of any name which is more appropriate to a competition at this

influential level, and I look forward to being with him when he presents

the trophy.''

At senior level, meanwhile, Kingussie open their defence of the

Keyline Macaulay Cup with a home first-round tie against Strathglass

while their second string, defending the Glenmorangie Sutherland Cup,

have an away first-round meeting with Inverness.
