WHILE the name CPC (UK) Ltd might not be familiar to many people

outside of Paisley, the brand names Knorr and Hellmann's most certainly

are.

CPC's Scottish base at Falside Road, Paisley, employs 450 people in

the manufacture and packing of Knorr soups and stock cubes, and

Hellmann's mayonnaise.

The company, originally Brown & Polson Ltd, the famous patent corn

starch manufacturers, has been producing at Falside Road since the

1850s.

Over the past three years, the company has actively pursued a quality

improvement programme covering all aspects of its operations.

Beginning with a #12m investment programme in buildings and equipment

to provide a quality manufacturing environment, the company has gone on

to invest in the training and re-training of employees.

This has involved the organisation of Process Technician and Food

Hygiene courses with Glasgow College of Food Technology, Maintenance

Multi-skilling courses with Metcom Training Ltd and the Engineering

Training Authority, as well as a fully staffed in-house training

department.

In August, the workforce gained accreditation to BS5750: Part 1, and

CPC intend to progress towards TQM and Investors In People.

Factory manager Martin Woodward says: ''For us, quality is defined

simply as what the customer wants.''

The company is actively supportive of the West of Scotland Quality

Forum, and finds this an ideal way to keep abreast of the latest

initiatives in quality management.

CPC is committed to continuous improvement. Says Martin Woodward: ''We

believe quality is a journey, not a destination.''
