ENGLISH rugby fans were urged in the Commons last night to take

matters into their own hands and sing God Save the Queen at Saturday's

international against South Africa's Springboks. The rallying call by

Tory Graham Riddick came in the midst of fierce controversy over the

move to omit the National Anthem from the Twickenham song-sheet at the

request of the South African Rugby Football Union. The row stemmed from

the African National Congress's opposition to the rendition of the

official South African anthem ''Die Stem'' at matches. Mr Riddick (Colne

Valley) criticised ''the rather feeble decision of the Rugby Union

authorities to kowtow to the ANC and decide not to play the National

Anthem at Twickenham on Saturday''.
