THE UN Security Council has imposed a naval blockade on Yugoslavia to

curb sanctions breaking in Serbia and Montenegro. It called on

governments to stop and search ships in the Adriatic and along the

Danube river. The wording, similar to a naval embargo against Iraq, will

allow shots to be fired across the bow of a vessel if it does not stop.

The sanctions were imposed because of Belgrade's assistance to Serbs

battling the Muslim-led Bosnian Government. The debate had been demanded

by Islamic countries. More than 15,000 people have died in the fighting.

Meanwhile more than 170 Bosnian war refugees stuck on the

Austria-Slovenia border are to be refused visas to enter Britain, it was

disclosed in the Commons last night.
