TABLE Nov ember 16.

I was disappointed to read Shona Barr's reply (October 26) to

Professor C. M. W. Wilson's letter (October 14) on the subject of ME and

its treatment.

As the husband of one who suffered from ME (very severely) for nine

years I feel I am qualified to comment on the allegation that Professor

Wilson is raising false hopes.

In the absence of any initiative or support from many GPs, and in

common with many sufferers, we sought help from a wide variety of

alternative sources. This was very expensive, time consuming, and

ultimately totally ineffective.

It was not until we heard about Professor Wilson from another victim

(now well) that we began to see a dramatic improvement in my wife's

condition. That improvement has continued apace and she, along with

others we know, has regained a feeling of wellbeing.

We feel it is not a question of Professor Wilson raising false hopes

but of his offering effective solutions where we found none before. We

sympathise with those who might not respond to this treatment but it is

apparent that there are many who do respond. For us, this was the case

and we are grateful to Professor Wilson.
