Amsterdam, Friday

DUTCH Nazi war criminal Jacob Luitjens, known as ''the Beast of

Drenthe'', arrived in the Netherlands today after being deported from

Canada.

Two van loads of police whisked him away to an immigration office and

arrest.

Forty-four years after being sentenced to life imprisonment by a Dutch

court for betraying members of the resistance to the wartime German

occupiers, Luitjens was taken to a detention centre in Groningen.

He will await the outcome of a last-ditch appeal to a court in the

Hague to allow him to remain free pending the outcome of a request for a

royal pardon, filed today.

If pardon is denied, the 73-year-old botany professor plans to appeal

for a retrial on the grounds that he did not know of the 1948

conviction.--Reuter.
