IAN FLEMING's notebook, The James Bond File, sold at Sotheby's

yesterday for #14,300, paid by the author's nephew and nieces, Nicholas

and Lucy Fleming and Mrs Kate Grimond. The proceeds will go to the

London Library, founded by the Scottish man of letters Thomas Carlyle in

1841, which is now in need of #2m to build extensions for 100,000 more

books.

The Bond notebook, given for sale by Fleming's stepdaughter, Mrs Fionn

Morgan, was expected to fetch up to #30,000. It was among a number of

manuscripts and books, donated for the library by well-known names in

the world of literature and the theatre, which sold for a total of

#90,439.
