THE table on which Stephen Hendry won his first world snooker championship is up for sale at offers over GBP450,000 - with a mansion thrown in.

The collector's item is being sold as part of the fixtures and fittings of a house sale in Walkerburn, Peebles-shire. Owners Ian and Betty Robson hope the table will be pocketed by a fan.

Harry Lukas, from Buccleuch John Sale, an estate agent in the Borders, said the green baize table should prove an unusual draw to potential buyers.

He said: "This is a unique property in a fine setting and with amazing space which is so rare today in modern houses, the snooker room has tremendous possibilities.

"There can only ever be one table that Stephen Hendry won his first world championship on and I expect it will raise a fair amount of interest."

Mr Robson, a former miner and personnel manager, built the house in the Borders village of Walkerburn three years ago.

He said: "As a boy I used to dream of having a big house in the Borders overlooking the River Tweed with enough room for a championship table, so dreams really can come true."

He added: "I used to play a lot of competitive snooker and there was a time when I considered going professional but knew I didn't have the magic to make it in the big time. I used to play against Stephen Hendry when he was working his way up the ranks as a boy so having the actual table he won the world championship on is fantastic.

"It is time for us to move on now and if someone would like to buy the snooker table with the house, they are welcome to it."

The table was made for the 1990 world championships in Sheffield, where Hendry beat Jimmy White 18 games to 12.

Mr Robson bought the steelframed table several years ago when it came on the market, but is willing to let it go as part of the house purchase.

The table forms the centrepiece of a downstairs entertainment area.

The area also features a home cinema system, a bar, sauna and Jacuzzi.
