Foundation Final

Australia completed a runaway victory in the Golf Foundation team championship for schools' international final over the Old Course, St Andrews, yesterday.

Leaders by 11 strokes overnight from England and New Zealand, the young Australians won the R&A Trophy by 16 shots in the end with a two-over-par team aggregate of 434 for the 36-hole tournament.

England faded into third place on 457, leaving New Zealand to fill the runner-up spot on 450.

Defending champions South Africa finished fourth on 464 with Wales and Scotland tied for fifth place on 474.

The Scots, represented by Bearsden Academy, Glasgow, improved by eight strokes, thanks to a par round of 72 by Martin Laird. Scott Dickson returned a 79 and David Rodger an 82.

Australia completed a double in the individual championship, with the PGA European Tour Trophy going to Gavin Flint, who shot a four-under-par 140. Final totals:
