YOUNG people on The Prince's Trust programme have unveiled a community project which will benefit local schoolchildren.

As part of the 12-week programme the team had to complete a community project, and chose Rudheath Primary Academy.

Six young people completed a refurbishment of part of the courtyard area in the school, which took them three weeks.

They extended the library area to include an outside seating area so children would have a chillout space during lessons, as well as an area to spend breaks and lunchtime reading.

It also meant classes could use it for their lessons during the summer and for fundraising events.

The team met principal Andrew Ross to decide on the project and look at the plans and ideas the school had for the area.

They held a fundraising bag pack at Tesco in Northwich, supported by employee Julie Stockton, raising £292, and attended a planning and budgeting session with Barclays staff at Gadbrook Park.

Barclays helped with £100 towards the project costs, and the team received £500 from the Police and Crime Commissioners fund.

Team members cleaned and scrubbed the bricks in the courtyard area, built seating boxes and stained and varnished them, researched the reading lists from each school year and designed and painted the book covers for the walls.

Then researched inspirational quotes for children and designed them as artwork to be attached to the seating units. Cushions were bought and covered with material to use as seats.

Sudexho provided tree stumps for the seats, which the team sanded and varnished to make them safe for children to sit on. One of the team’s family donated a tree and plant pot for the seating area.

Hazel Crampton, Northwich Prince’s Trust project manager said: “They worked well as a team to complete the project on time and in budget. They were well organised and efficient especially as some days they struggled with the weather.”

The Prince’s Trust programme is led by Cheshire Fire and Rescue Service and gives young people aged 16 to 25 the opportunity to learn new skills, complete qualifications and increase self-confidence.
