BEN Evans could spend tonight, Thursday, in a London hospital after rupturing his hamstring in what Tony Smith has labelled an ‘unnecessary’ style of tackling.

The Wolves forward had to be carried off in the second half as his side fell to a 32-24 defeat to St Helens at Langtree Park.

And Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby says Evans could be sent to the capital for treatment tonight.

“Very bad,” said Smith. “He’s going to a local hospital and he’ll probably be in London by the end of the night.

“He’s ruptured his hamstring, it’s a wishbone type situation where his legs are pulled apart and it does happen from time to time.

“Sometimes this is the outcome.

“When you’re leg-lifting and use that as a method of tackling it can go wrong for some people and it’s nasty.

“It’s a nasty injury. It’s certainly something that’s been brought to the attention of the league to have a look at these types of tackles.

“So far we’ve got no rules in place to protect our players. We protect them from some high tackles at times, but leg-lifting and particularly single leg-lifting is a really unnecessary style.

“For Ben it’s a pretty poor outcome really.”
