SPORTING achievements in mid Cheshire were celebrated at a county awards ceremony.

The sixth annual Cheshire West and Chester Sports Awards recognised the achievements of children, schools, businesses, groups, people who have triumphed through adversity and those who inspire others.

Delamere CE Academy was named School of the Year at the event and Jed Barlow, from Northwich Rowing Club, scooped the award for Activator of the Year.

The ceremony was held at the Doubletree Hilton Hotel, in Chester, and hosted by Nick Hancock, from 'Room 101' and 'They Think It's All Over'.

It was supported by Active Cheshire and principal sponsor Butcher and Barlow.

David Briggs, Lord Lieutenant of Cheshire and patron of Active Cheshire, said: "Tonight’s awards reflect the many ways and places that people choose to get active.

"They included the traditional community clubs but also alternative community settings, schools, colleges, universities and the workplace."

Winsford hairdresser Leeanne Forsey and Theresa Batemann, founder of Fabb Fitness, spoke about the This Girl Can campaign which is inspiring a group of women to become more active in their everyday lives.

Theresa said: "I don't want them running marathons, it's just about doing things that fit into their daily lives and educating them so they can feed it down to the next generation."

Anne Boyd, chief executive of Active Cheshire, said: "We are continually astounded by the amount of people who regularly get out and make sport and physical activities happen for people in Cheshire West and for a pro-active council who invest so much in the region to enable people access top quality leisure facilities, wonderful groups and programmes."
