WARRINGTON Wolves expect to welcome a number of their injured troops back ahead of a hectic schedule of fixtures.

Wolves face St Helens tonight, Thursday, and Huddersfield a week on Friday, before four games in 15 days over the Easter period.

But Tony Smith is hopeful that at least three of those set to miss out at Langtree Park, Gary Wheeler, Joel Monaghan and Anthony England, will be back to face the Giants.

“Joel’s a possibility for Huddersfield, so is Gary Wheeler,” said Smith. “It’s unlikely for Rich (Myler), he’ll be a little bit further on, more around the Widnes weekend.

“Anthony England will be back in the mix, maybe against Huddersfield as well.

“Hopefully we do get some of those bodies back prior to the Easter, because we have that silly Easter season coming up when we play four games in two weeks.”

Smith’s side showed their strength-in-depth during a well-deserved win over Leeds Rhinos, while Wolves’ head of coaching and rugby will be asking for another big pack performance at leaders Saints.

“I don’t think there’s any doubting how strong our pack is,” he added. “We’ve got some terrific young players as well as senior players who are well-seasoned and performing well.

“They can handle anyone in the competition. I certainly don’t think our pack fears anybody. They are up against a very big pack this week, very big front rowers who take some handling at different stages.

“But we’ve been able to manage that in the past, so hopefully we will be able to again this time.”

“We’ve got a significant amount of players out with injury at the moment, but we’re still not too far off performing well on a weekly basis.

“That’s down to the young players coming in. George King and Joe Philbin, Ben Currie being able to adapt from one side to the other – playing left centre and right centre.

“We’ve got some players who’ve adapted very well and are every versatile when they’re asked.

"George King plays loose forward, front row and back row.

“Ben Evans comes in and does a similar sort of role. We’ve got a lot of versatility and depth in our squad in comparison to many others.”

Meanwhile, Ashton Sims has impressed Smith since his arrival.

“It’s still early for Ash,” explained Smith. “He hasn’t played or seen all the players, he’s seen them on TV but he hasn’t come up against them.

“The more familiar you become, the more aware you are of what you can and can’t do against certain teams – he’s still learning, but he’s progressed well and settled in exceptionally well.

“He looks comfortable in our team and he’s got a great understanding with the players. He’s a big personality on and off the field for the team.

“He’s contributing in all sorts of way, so I couldn’t be more happy with Ash at this stage.”
