WARRINGTON Wolves first kicked off a season against Salford in 1953-54 – and they went on to win the double.

The Wilderspool side set themselves up for Challenge Cup and Championships successes that campaign with a 17-4 triumph.

It is one of four times the sides have met on the first day of the season since the Second World War.

The last time, and the only occasion Wolves have met Salford in a season opener at The Halliwell Jones Stadium, saw the visitors run out 24-6 victors in 2006.

Wolves edged to a 22-20 success at Widerspool in 1991, but were beaten at Salford, 11-25, in 1975.

This weekend will also prove the first time Warrington have opened their campaign at home on a Saturday since a clash with Keighley in August 1963.

Red Devils visit Wolves under the guidance of ex-Warrington man Iestyn Harris, who has enjoyed his first pre-season at the AJ Bell.

Harris has added some high-profile signings, not least second-rower Cory Paterson.

The Aussie boxer could line up alongside Weller Hauraki, arriving from Castleford Tigers, and Scott Taylor, from Wigan.

Michael Dobson rejoins Super League following a short spell with Newcastle Knights.

Other signings include former Leeds Rhino Ben Jones-Bishop.
