FACEBOOK users are backing plans by Waitrose to change the free tea and coffee rules for myWaitrose customers at the cafe at its Northwich store.

One reader said Waitrose was “a business, not a drop-in centre,” and another said it must be frustrating for the cafe staff to not take any money by serving free drinks.

Customers have been able to have a free tea or coffee at the cafe by presenting their myWaitrose card at the till.

However from Monday, February 9, card holders will have to buy something from the cafe to continue to enjoy a free hot drink.

MyWaitrose customers who don’t wish to buy something from the cafe will still be able to get a free take-away tea or coffee from self-service machines near the front of the store.

Numerous people have had their say over the change in the rules on the Northwich Guardian Facebook page.

Gill Jackson said: “At the end of the day it’s a business, not a drop-in centre! It’s great that they offer a free take-away service! I've even witnessed this being abused. I saw one guy get his coffee, walk up and down an aisle and then out! You could argue, oh well they can afford it, but that’s just not cricket is it!”

Paula Kelly agreed with the planned rule change.

She said: “We always buy something else, but many just sit there with their free drinks. Must be frustrating for the staff to keep serving drinks and not take any money.”

Sam Gillett said: “Sounds quite reasonable to me,” and Stephanie Lazzari said: “I agree with this. Northwich customers don't realise how lucky they are!!”

Zoe Cadman said: “U can still get a free drink from the machines at the welcome desk without a purchase. I think it’s reasonable to keep spaces for customers purchasing food in the cafe!”

Sarah Beard said: “I always buy a cake or something, it's only fair!”
