IDEAS are coming forward for Northwich's subway now it has been saved from closure.

The public asked for the underpass beneath Chesterway to stay open in a public consultation run by Cheshire West and Chester Council (CWAC) and Northwich Town Council.

CWAC had suggested filling the subway in because surface pedestrian crossings have been included in the gyratory at the junction of Chesterway and Watling Street, but this would have come with a £500,000 price tag.

Cllr Janet Illidge, from Northwich Town Council, said: "I think we're all very pleased that our hard work on the consultation worked for the people of Northwich.

"Its a great decision to keep it open and I don't think CWAC will ever regret it.

"Moving forward from the consultation we need to think of a way to improve it."

She suggested new lighting and CCTV as well as removing high maintenance vegetation at the Memorial Court side and replacing it with sculpture.

Cllr Illidge also said that Northwich schoolchildren could be invited to decorate the inside of the subway.

Chris Shaw, town clerk, said that the town council would be working through the public consultation responses with CWAC to look at the suggestions from residents.
