A PROMISING Warrington gymnast is eyeing more glory in 2015 after a successful year wearing Great Britain colours.

Bridgewater High School pupil Lucy Stanhope, a member of the GB High Performance Squad, will enter the junior age category for competitions from January 1.

Most recently the Sportsaid-supported gymnast returned from the Espoir British Championships in Glasgow with four medals, taking gold on beam, floor silver and vault bronze as well as all-round silver.

That followed an English Championships title, international debut gold with Team GB in October at the Rushmoor Rose Bowl Invitational and another Team GB gold at the Olympic Hopes Cup in November.

The 13-year-old even boasts an appearance on BBC show Tumble, alongside Beth Tweddle, to her name in 2014.

“It’s been a good year for her,” said mum Wendy. “She’s done really well, got in the GB squad and had a couple of opportunities with them this year."

The City of Liverpool gymnast took up the sport aged four and now trains five days a week. "She loves it. She lives for gymnastics.”

Stanhope will be eligible this year for junior events such as the European Championships, Commonwealth Games and European Youth Olympic Festival.

However, she opens her calendar with the British Championships at Liverpool’s Echo Arena in March.

“She’s back in the gym and already learning skills ready to put out for the junior championships,” added Wendy.

“It’s pretty much home turf and there will be a lot of support from the club."

“From January 1 she falls into the junior category so moves up another age group to compete with the 14 and 15-year-olds.”

The teenager, who attends GB sessions at Lilleshall National Sports Centre, will miss the 2016 Rio Olympic Games despite learning from some of the country’s top talent.

“Unfortunately she won’t be old enough for Rio 2016. You have to be 16 in the year of the competition and she’ll only be 15.

“She trains with some Olympians from 2012; Rebecca Tunney, Hannah Whelan and Beth Tweddle before she retired.

“It’s an amazing experience. If you have a gymnast that’s talented you have to go somewhere like Liverpool to bring them to their full potential.

“We said if this is the kind of career she wants then we have to make that move," explained Wendy.
