A TEENAGE sharp shooter from Woolston has become one of the country’s top 10 archers at the same time as raising money for charity.

Joseph Matthews was recently ranked as Great Britain’s number 10 archer at under 16s level and is now training at Lilleshall’s National Sports Centre.

However, the 14-year-old Birchwood Community High School student also reached a target he set at last year’s Children In Need by shooting 1,000 arrows every week up until this year’s event.

“It took about another 10 hours on top of his normal training each week,” explained mum Karen Matthews.

“So it was quite a feat.”

The Bowmen of Warrington archer also shoots for Cheshire and is this year’s county champion.

“They train a couple of times a week at Sir Thomas Boteler High School with Bowmen of Warrington,” Karen added.

“But the academy at Lilleshall is set up with the aim of getting archers to Olympic standard.

“So hopefully it will help him on his way to shooting for Great Britain.”

Joseph had raised just short of £1,000 for Children In Need at the time of writing.
