MIDFIELDER David Mannix believes Warrington Town’s team spirit can help cause an FA Cup upset tonight.

The former Liverpool reserves player is in his third season with the Yellows, but the clash with Exeter City will be his biggest game yet for the club.

And Mannix feels the ‘togetherness’ of the squad has played a key role in their history-making cup run so far.

“I came about two years ago mid-way through the season and there had been about 50 players signed on,” said the 29-year-old.

“It started to settle down, other than bringing in one or two to strengthen, which you need to do. We have kept the core group of players and the togetherness is great.

“If we go out for meals we all go out, if we go out and celebrate after a game then we all go together.

“Everyone at Warrington is involved, it’s a good group and that’s the reason why players come here.”

Mannix, who has spent time at Chester City, Accrington Stanley and in the Norwegian top flight with HamKam, is confident the Yellows have a chance against their League Two counterparts.

“They’re not just going to come here and get an easy ride,” he added. “The style of play we have, I don’t think any teams enjoy playing against us, especially not those in our league.

“On our day we are capable of definitely causing an upset to Exeter. We’ve played seven games already going into this one so have a lot of confidence, whereas this is the first round for them.

“Getting Exeter, that’s what we were after. There were bigger clubs that we had set our sights on, but we wanted a Football League club and we got that.

“It’s probably the biggest match in Warrington’s history.”

And the former England youth international hopes a high-profile FA Cup outing will put a smile on boss Shaun Reid’s face.

“It’s not easy at all,” he joked. “With Shaun everyone knows him, he’s never quiet, but it’s because he always wants the best for the club.

“He’s that motivated and the lads that are there are there because they have the character to play for him.

“I’ve not got many years left in my career, especially with the injuries I’ve had, but having Shaun can raise your game that extra five or 10 per cent.”

The club’s stand-in skipper is also enjoying the attention the Yellows’ run has brought.

“Getting to the FA Cup first round is great for the club, but also for the people of Warrington,” he said. “A lot of people have got behind us.

“I played for Chester when we were in League Two against Leeds United in the cup live on Sky Sports, Jermaine Beckford scored a hat-trick and we lost 5-2.

“But this game will feel like a big game no matter what level the players have played at. On the day every player will be getting excited.

“There are some lads who have played at a higher level and in front of the cameras, but for others it will be their first time.

“It will be great for the lads and great to bring some coverage into the club. People have been showing a big interest through the rounds with the Peter and Shaun Reid link and being one of the lowest ranked sides in the cup.

“It’s the biggest game I’ll have played for Warrington and I’m well up for it, as will all the lads be.”
