A PERFORMANCE moved its cast and audience to tears when it played a sold out run in Northwich.

The Harlequin Players' latest production, Remember Them, followed the story of a group of friends during and after the First World War.

IIt was researched and written by brother and sister team Stuart Oakes and Susan Cowley to commemorate 100 years since the start of the conflict.

Director Angela Byron said: "I must thank out wonderful audiences who supported us during our run.

"They certainly took the play to heart, many tears were shed during the performances, and one could hear a pin drop during many of the scenes.

"To have standing ovations certainly moved our cast and many had tears in their eyes at the end of the run."

The 27-strong cast was so large that the Players had to arrange for a portable building to hold actors and costumes for 1914, 1918 and 1972.

Actors ranged in age from seven to 78.

Angela said: "The camaraderie between them was incredible.

"Many friendships were formed and the younger members have said they will look at November 11 with a greater respect as the years go by."

Opening night, on October 21, was held in aid of 1st Davenham Scouts and raised £615.

Three of the four remaining nights were sold out and had a waiting list.

"For a local theatre with 96 seats this was a definite first for the Harlequins," Angela said.

She added: " We used First World War footage to enhance some of the trench scenes.

"The scene 'Over the Top' was accompanied by smoke, video footage and some amazing artillery gunfire, cannon fire and laser lighting.

"This is one of the many scenes that will live with me for a long time.

"Thanks to Gordon Hamlin for his artistic lighting plot and Iain Bowley for his haunting music, recorded by local musicians.

"The trenches were build by Gordon Hamlin and Mike McDonald and everyone commented on how authentic they were.

"I was very proud to have been asked by the writers to direct this play and from their comments we certainly gave it the credit it deserved."
