HUNDREDS turned out at two train stations in the area on Saturday to watch a moving performance that remembered those lost during the First World War.

The choral commemoration featured the words and songs of the First World War and captures the spirit of optimism and patriotism of soldiers leaving for the front 100 years ago.

A community choir of ‘soldiers’, ‘nurses’ and their loved ones recreated the departure accompanied by live musicians.

It was performed at Northwich station at 10.30am, followed an hour later with a performance at Plumley.

Featuring well-loved songs of the period, Over by Christmas was created to capture the spirit of optimism and patriotism of those leaving their loved ones, perhaps never to see them again.

Within two weeks of war being declared 670 trains throughout the country carried 118,000 men, 37,650 horse, 314 large guns and 1,800 bicycles along with thousands of tons of baggage to Southampton to board ships to continental Europe.

Stations such as Northwich and Plumley would have seen scenes similar to those played out on Saturday.

John Hulme, vice chairman of Mid Cheshire Rail Users Association, told the Guardian it was an emotional experience.

"It went exceptionally well," he said.

"Plumley station was packed as well, which for a small village was a great plus. A large part of the other platform at Northwich was packed, there must have been at least 100 there.

"It was very poignant and a commemoration so it was quite moving. You end up with a lump in your throat watching it and it brings home what our fore fathers went through. It was a real privilege to be there."

The production was supported by Cheshire West and Chester and Cheshire East Councils, Mid Cheshire Community Rail Partnership, Chester Business Club, Jane Lewis Health and Social Care, Merseyrail, Virgin Trains, Arriva Trains Wales and Northern Rail.
