AMATEUR radio enthusiasts will be contacting boat lifts across Europe this weekend as part of a special event station transmitting from Anderton Boat Lift.

The Boat Lifts On The Air day on Sunday, September 14, is being organised by the Mid Cheshire Amateur Radio Society.

The event is promoting the society and amateur radio in general as well as marking the accolade for the boat lift when it received an engineering heritage award in recognition of its status as the oldest operational boat lift in the world.

This Sunday’s event is open to the public, who will be able to see an amateur radio field station in operation.

“We are scheduled to contact five other boat lifts by radio on the day, and will be displaying radio equipment and demonstrating the many modes and frequencies available to radio hams,” said society chairman Colin Cresswell from Barnton.

“I would like to say a big thank you to Anderton Boat Lift for letting us use their site.”

People are welcome to contact the society on the day, and the call sign for the boat lift is GB0(zero)ABL. The society will be based in a marquee at the base of the boat lift.
