GRAMMAR school youngsters from the 1940s are the stars of this week's Remember When.

Chris Roberts, from Knutsford, was prompted to bring in his photographs from the Winsford Verdin County Grammar School after previous coverage of pupil and staff photos from 1957.

The 1957 picture was a chance find behind a kitchen cupboard in Winnington Lane when Pauline Chester was helping her granddaughter to renovate her house.

We published it in the Guardian in a bid to find its owner, and soon successfully reunited the metre-long photo with former pupil Irene Whittaker, neé Barker.

But a by-product of the publication was a whole host of tales from other former pupils and teachers.

Chris, who grew up in Northwich, sent in these pictures, which feature headteacher Mr Bellamy alongside staff and pupils from 1946 and 1948.

He said: "It was a fantastic school.

"I used to go on the bus from Northwich and sometimes on my bike.

"I would cycle through Moulton, down the River Weaver and along to Winsford.

"It was good in those days.

"The current school is on the site of our sports field.

"I couldn't resist bringing the pictures in after I saw the first one in the Guardian.

"I thought 'I've got older ones than that'."

Chris said his brother David was pictured in the 1997 photograph, who went on to teach at Knutsford High School for 30 years.

He added that he was in the same form as Mr Bellamy's daughter.
