MOULTON Drama Group is celebrating success at the annual Cheshire Theatre Guild Awards.

The company won an Adjudicator’s award for the cast and team who staged the comedy Glorious! at Moulton Village Hall in May.

The show tells the story of soprano Florence Foster Jenkins, who found success in New York in the 1940s despite being widely regarded as the worst singer in the world.

The role of Florence was played by Barbara Steel, who stepped in to play the part after the cast member who was due to play the soprano had to drop out three weeks before the comedy was due to be staged in February.

Glorious! was postponed until May, being staged instead of the scheduled Caramba’s Revenge, which will now be performed in November.

The Adjudicator’s award was presented to drama group chairman Sheila Hetherington at the MADS Little Theatre in Macclesfield, who was accompanied at the awards evening by wardrobe mistress Mandy Hague.

“The award was for Barbara Steel and the Glorious! team for the whole production,” said Sheila.

“The show was a real team effort, and Barbara was excellent as Florence Foster Jenkins.”

Caramba’s Revenge, a black comedy by William Norfolk, is being staged at the village hall from November 11 to 15, and is being directed by Annie Makepeace.
