Reasons to celebrate for 146 Squadron Northwich air cadets

A SQUADRON of air cadets is going from strength to strength as it celebrates its 75th anniversary.

Northwich’s 146 Squadron ATC was formed in June 1939 as an Air Defence Cadet Corp unit and is now one of the largest and most successful of the 960 ATC squadron’s in the country.

Four former cadets have also been promoted during this anniversary year.

Pilot Officer Martin Moores RAFVR(T), 27, and Pilot Officer Sarah Ross RAFVR(T), 25, are from Barnton.

Both became civilian instructors at the squadron after seven years of being cadets.

After success in the selection process they then received their Commissions from RAF Cranwell in June.

Although part of the RAF Volunteer Reserve, the selection process is the same as the regular RAF.

As a result, of all the Cadet services, officers in the Air Training Corps have a recognised Queens Commission.

146 Squadron also welcomed Sgt Ian Quayle, of Northwich, and Sgt Louise Carroll, of Barnton, both former cadets, who have been accepted as adult Sergeants, non-commissioned officers.

Squadron Leader Paul Thompson, RAFVR(T), the Commanding Officer of 146 Squadron, said: “It is extremely satisfying to welcome ex-cadets back as staff members.

“They recognise what they achieved and the opportunities they were given during their time as a cadet and now they want to give something back.

“146 has benefited thousands of youths of Northwich over the last 75 years – and with continued support from adult staff, some of which are ex-cadets, this will continue for many more years to come."

For more information about the squadron visit theaircadets.org or call in and speak to one of the staff team.

Parades are at the Darwin Street headquarters on Tuesdays and Fridays from 7pm until 9.30pm.
